The album features fifteen favourites selected from more than one hundred Christmas recordings, alongside the newly released original song \u201cOn This Christmas (It Only Gets Better)\u201d \u2014 Sufjan\u2019s first new Christmas song in nearly fifteen years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"471\" data-end=\"985\">It all began in 2001, when Sufjan set out to make a Christmas gift for friends and family and ended up recording seven songs, which he called <em data-start=\"613\" data-end=\"627\">Noel, Vol. 1<\/em>. Every few years at Christmas, he recorded another album in much the same way: over the course of a week in December, usually at home, simply involving whoever happened to be around at the time. This led to collaborations with Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire, Cat Martino, Gabriel Kahane, and members of Danielson.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"987\" data-end=\"1216\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Asthmatic Kitty released the first five volumes as a set in 2006, followed by the next five in 2012.
