In 1888, Van Gogh began painting a series of works to decorate his studio and celebrate the arrival of his friend Paul Gaugin to Arles. The work sculpts the flower petals and creates a basket-weave pattern on the painting as the artist uses vivid colours such as yellow and blue that are overall heightened by the large yellow vase, which we translated onto our design.

Unfortunately, due to a falling-out with Gaugin (rumour has it), after which Van Gogh sliced off his own earlobe in a paranoid panic, the artist was never able to decorate his studio.

If there’s anything no one can blame Faith No More for, is playing it safe. Even after all the success from “The Real Thing”, the band decided to take a turn, for something more meaningful for the new formation. Mike Patton would now play a bigger part in the band’s identity and writing, and that meant a different path. It wasn’t a consensual move, though. Jim Martin was unsure and their label though it was “commercial suicide”. The 2.5 million copies sold worldwide, prove them wrong.

The single “Epic” became Faith No More’s most popular song, and is somehow emblematic of the unusual sound of the band, mixing influences and styles, in which is often described as “rap metal” or “funk metal”.

Another collaboration with Philadelphia Museum of Art!

Tiptoe through the daylilies, irises. lilacs, morning glories, nasturtiums, roses and tulips…in socks inspired by artist Severin Roesen’s Still Life with Bird’s Nest from our American Art collection. A lavish depiction of flowers crowd this arrangement of blooms from all seasons.

Severin Roesen’s lavish tabletop array is crowded with blooms from all seasons–topped by a crown imperial and including lilacs, poppies, daylilies, tulips, irises, roses, morning glories, and nasturtiums, among others–and reflects the mid-nineteenth-century American taste for scenes of natural bounty. Strong, dense flower forms at the brightly lit center balance with more sinuous, silhouetted stems that reach outward to the edges of the composition.
Roesen simultaneously elevated still life painting in America and charted a new direction for its practice.

A Portrait Landscape.

Known for his fantastic imagery, Rousseau was a self-taught artist whose works appealed to the collectors and avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century, including Pablo Picasso. A mysterious atmosphere and mood can be felt in this highly poetic painting, with unique characters and incongruent details that have made this one of the artist’s most famous pieces. Rousseau called this a portrait landscape because the portrait in the foreground is right on top of the landscape background.

Pop Art materialized in New York and London during the mid-1950s and became the dominant avant-garde style until the late 1960s. It’s widely considered to be the offspring of Dadaism given the satirical stance it takes on the established art world by appropriating images from the street, supermarket, mass media, and presenting them as art in itself. The work is characterized by bold compositions of everyday imagery – heavily dependent on tv and movie culture – with vibrant colours. It had a trendy ‘now’ feel to it that blurred the line between the commercial arts and the fine arts.

In a time when the all-knowing art critic could make or break new art in his written opinion of yesterday’s vernissage, the glorification of soup cans, comic strips and hamburgers to the status of fine art was simply shocking to the establishment. But that was the thing about it. Pop Art just didn’t care about critics. Artists understood that fame, recognition, and money could be obtained regardless of what a bitchy review might say about them and their work. And contrary to the establishment of critics and veteran gallery crowd, the rest of the world saw something they could understand and relate to. The revolution of Pop Art was the democratization of art beyond stuck up galleries.

Now, did Warhol, Haring or Hockney make Art better as a whole? No one can say for sure and maybe that’s the whole point. But, 60 years later, theirs and other pop artists’ influence can easily be seen in almost every aspect of modern society.

Originally planned to be a lightweight interceptor, the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt evolved into a heavyweight fighter plane, weighing up to eight tons when fully loaded. It was the largest single-engined fighter of its era and a vast improvement over its predecessor, the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. With twice the weight of a Spitfire and an 18-cylinder, 2,600-horsepower Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp that could push her to over 440mph and up to 40,000 feet.

The T-Bolt started flying in the United States Army Air Forces in 1942. Its primary armament was eight .50 calibre machine guns, quite useful in high-altitude escort missions. But it was in ground attack sorties that the P-47 proved most effective. As a low-level fighter-bomber, it would be armed with 5-inch rockets or a bomb load of 2,500 lb (1,100 kg). The P-47 quickly gained a reputation for ruggedness. Its sturdy construction and air-cooled radial engine enabled the Thunderbolt to absorb severe battle damage and keep flying.

One of the Jug’s most notorious party tricks was the ability to out-dive other aircraft, using its weight to turn the tables in a dogfight. It quickly became one of the most used fighters by the USAAF in World War II while also serving with other Allied air forces. It flew over half a million missions, destroyed 7,000 enemy aircraft on the ground and in the air, and had an aerial kill ratio of almost 5:1. As an incredible testament to its service by wars end, less than 1 per cent of P-47 Thunderbolts were lost in action. Somewhat of a modern-day counterpart, the A-10 Thunderbolt II ‘Warthog’ shares its name and function.

The Big Stud.
The P-47D-10, 42-75008, ‘Big Stud’ was flown by Lt. Col. Robert Baseler, an American Ace in the European Theatre, during his tenure as Commanding Officer of the 325th Fighter Group from April 1943 to April 1944. Baseler, whose military decorations include, among many others, a Purple Heart, scored his sixth and final victory in the ‘Big Stud’ in 1944.

War was their third album but the first where the band found their true political voice. The boy on the cover is Peter Rowen who’s face has appeared in several other U2 covers. The accusing look in his eyes and the cut on his lip make a powerful statement. One that means to prompt reflection for all.

Either way, you can still be the life of the house party, the ruler of the parquet. You just might need the right socks to get in.

Reggae also fostered identity and unity of the Jamaican community and has had a lasting impact on today’s popular culture, fashion, art, and even politics. Reggae’s heavy basslines, off-beat rhythms, and syncopated melodies have influenced many other music genres, including hip-hop and EDM.

Moreover, reggae music has had a role in spreading Rastafarianism, the 1930s religious and social movement that originated from African spirituality.

Through its ability to connect people and promote social and political change, reggae music still remains a powerful force to this day. So, march to the beat of your own drum with these peaceful socks!
