First things first: yes, Chanel Beads’ second album, Your Day Will Come, has the same title as the experimental project’s 2024 breakthrough debut. But this is a completely new body of work, not a “part two,” a rehash or a re-do. If his initial impulse was to poke fun at the apparatus that divides music into chapters, as the songs developed, Shane Lavers found the phrase carried deeper nuance, evoking the duel between certainty and doubt that preoccupied his psyche. Though the phrase unfurls with conviction, a slight shift in emphasis can inspire unsettling ambiguities: Will your day come? What will it be like? How can you be sure? These dualities were top of mind when Lavers wrote “Song for the Messenger,” the track that properly introduces Your Day Will Come’s expanded vision. Like the majority of the album, it was made as Lavers adjusted to life as a full-time musician. Thoughts had more room to bounce around and curdle inside his head, and he often felt dulled down by a world that can feel absurdly cruel. On “Song for the Messenger,” the future collapses into itself as “the days still move and the window closes slowly.” “While writing the songs I kept asking myself, `If you are really so hopeless, what does your life look like with that clarity,'” Lavers says. Raised in the suburbs of Minnesota, Lavers began making music under the name Chanel Beads while living in Seattle back in 2016. When he wasn’t working at a library for the blind, he was collaging synthetic sounds and real instruments into beguiling songs fundamentally averse to genre. He was living in New York by 2022, as tracks like “Ef” and “True Altruism” captivated certain online circles with their androgynous vocals, uncanny artifice, and stirring intimacy. In the years since Chanel Beads’ entrancing introduction, the project has gone from playing house shows and illegal abandoned train tunnel shows, all the way up to supporting Lorde on her recent North American arena tour. The second iteration of Your Day Will Come catalogues a sonic shift and evolution in Chanel Beads’ sound. This time around, it’s layered with more original parts and players. Violinist Zachary Paul has a greater presence, though Lavers continues to toy with the semiotic baggage of plug-ins. The gossamer voice of Maya McGrory can once again be heard across the album, and she co-wrote the majestic “Silver Cup.” These 14 songs are increasingly fleshed out and structured, a result of a more collaborative approach that embraced spontaneity and imperfections. Casual hangs led to contributions from friends like Tchad Cousins (Urika’s Bedroom), Mari Maurice (More Eaze), Anastasia Coope, and Bella Litsa. “Dust in the Wind” is a joint effort with Isaac Eiger of Strange Ranger and Threshold, marking the first co-write from someone outside the core trio of Lavers, McGory, and Paul. Neither a solo project nor a band, Chanel Beads is “defined by the negatives,” says Lavers. Though the stages have grown larger, the spirit of Chanel Beads remains steadfastly underground. Lavers made Your Day Will Come at his small and sparsely furnished Brooklyn studio, with the speakers positioned so close to his face that he could feel air emit from every thump of the kick drum. He embraces the attitude of “if it works, leave it be,” recording into whatever microphone is around and going off that version. “We start the recording before the song is written, and then you work the song into the recording,” Lavers says. “We don’t make demos, that’s a hard and fast rule. Which we’ll break eventually.” Lavers’ fragmented lyrics are full of open-ended questions, exploring the dichotomies that inform our reality. He was particularly consumed by the coexistence of nihilism and love, saying, “It feels as if one should obliterate the other, but they don’t.” Emotional sublimation is central to Chanel Beads, as if you can white-knuckle something so hard that it becomes transcendent. Snarling beasts and shame accompany proclamations of devotion on “JBL in the Fireplace”: “That’s when they set the dogs on you/Fuck this world I still have love for you.” Drawing from Lavers’ own experiences, Your Day Will Come uses dream logic to delve into liminality and precarious remembrance. It’s colored by the spectres of specific losses, but also how you can haunt yourself by falling back into old habits. The elegiac centerpiece, “Tyler Richard,” is haunted by the `have we met before?’ sensation. Initially gentle and twinkling, each verse draws into a tighter fist until it bursts open in ecstatic despair. “It’s about the feeling when someone who has passed appears in a dream, and you wake up and have to remember that they are gone,” Lavers says. “As your life moves forward, grief can recur in these ways that feel like time flattens and circles back in on itself.” “I thought I saw you smiling in all my memories,” Lavers spits on the gleefully caustic “The Coward Forgets His Nightmare.” “It’s hard to dedicate yourself to art and not also indulgently dedicate yourself to yourself,” he says. “To me, that one is explicitly about reaching the end of your life, having lived in music, and wondering if you did the wrong thing.” As the veil falls on the present, you look back on a past littered with lost futures.

Dead Pioneers is rooted in a 2020 piece called The Punk Pan-Indian Romantic Comedy, a deeply personal work that dealt with vocalist Gregg Deal’s cultural upbringing. Following an embryonic performance of the piece, Deal secured a grant to expand it to include music created especially for the work. “The idea was to mix spoken-word with punk music” explains Deal, who hooked up with drummer Shane Zweygardt and guitarist Abe Brennan during lockdown and began kicking the concept around. But what became Dead Pioneers didn’t truly take shape until Deal connected with bassist Lee Tesche, who you may know from righteous Atlantan post-punks Algiers. Unlikely as it sounds, a conversation between Tesche and Deal about Sleaford Mods evolved into a creative connection that’s now three albums deep; the arrival of guitarist Joshua Rivera made the quintet quorate. “Josh is Mexican-American,” says Deal. “He is also inherently indigenous, under a different set of circumstances within colonialism. But I consider him to be my indigenous brother. We spend a lot of time trying to figure out how all of this fits together.” A miraculous, natural chemistry made this supposed one-off project an actual band almost as soon as they cut what became their 2023 self-titled debut album (“We approached it like I approach my visual art: execute quickly, first thought is best thought,” Deal says), but they didn’t necessarily take it seriously until, unexpectedly, the outside world did. “I was like, we’ve made this record – what should I do with it? Put it online?” Deal remembers. The response was vigorously positive, and soon came demands to commit this noise to vinyl. A first thousand-copy pressing sold out in minutes. “So then we pressed another thousand,” he adds, still marvelling at it all. “And then they were gone, too.” What followed was “a series of strange accidents” that led to the group signing to Hassle, befriending Jello Biafra and touring with kindred spirits like Pennywise, Propaghandi, even Pearl Jam. “Punk-rock had made everything seem so accessible when I was a kid,” says Deal. “Like, simply having the balls to get up on stage and stage dive and then be carried off by people that become your best friends once they get your feet back on the ground.” Now, punk-rock was reaching out its hands to Dead Pioneers and pulling them onto larger and larger stages. The group returned that favour by simply getting better and better: their second album, 2025’s PO$T AMERICAN, was sharper, angrier, funnier than the debut, a riot riveted with punch-a-Nazi thrills. And now, Wagon Burner, their fearsome third album. Described by Deal as “more collaborative”, it’s a heavier, harder but also more accessible set, vicious hooks scattered among the punk-rock melee and guest appearances by kindred spirits Cheap Perfume (on the righteous `Nazi Teeth’), The Interrupters (on the shout-a-long anthem `Never Alone’) and, bringing it back to the group’s beginnings, Sleaford Mods (on the searing slow-burn of `The Worst Among Us’). The world might be darkening by the day, but Dead Pioneers are rising to that miserable occasion, casting their empowering light into the gloom.

When MONO recorded their previous album, OATH, with longtime production partner and friend, Steve Albini in 2023, they never fathomed that it would be the final studio album they made together. Albini tragically died the following year, and that loss left an incalculable void in the lives of not just everyone who ever knew Steve, but everyone with an attachment to any of the thousands of records he helped bring into world over the past four decades. He brought a clarity to the chaos, and a selfless sense of service to art and artists that was unrivaled. On both a personal and practical level, the loss left MONO faced with profound grief and uncertainty. Albini had become a fundamental part of MONO’s unmistakable sound, and the thought of replacing him was daunting, to say the least. Enter: Brad Wood (Touché Amoré, The Smashing Pumpkins). Chosen for both his familiarity with MONO’s creative and technical working process – as well as his decades-long friendship with Steve Albini – Brad Wood entered Albini’s storied Electrical Audio studios in September 2025 to record what would become Snowdrop. Once again working with Chicago-based conductor and orchestral musical director, Chad McCullough, MONO enlisted a 10-piece orchestra as well as an 8-piece choir for the eight massive pieces that make up Snowdrop. With the band performing and Wood recording in the same hallowed space where most of MONO’s records had been made in their quarter-century history, the songs on Snowdrop carry an extra weight. Mixed by Wood at his Seagrass home studio in Los Angeles, the album is equally intimate and enveloping. Where there could easily be a pall hanging over Snowdrop, there is instead an extraordinary air of gratitude. Rather than steep in heartache, there is a poignant appreciation for the resonance of life well-spent with a dear friend – and the yearning for what may come. Snowdrop is the sound of a band turning shock and sadness into hope and wonder – and finding renewed focus in the freedom of unknowing.

This record simultaneously celebrates and critiques the current era of warped reality and AI imitation. The title reflects a duality: an oversaturation, being "sick of music" in an age where over 100,000 new tracks, many AI-generated, are uploaded daily, making us question reality; and a "pathological devotion" that continues to drive the band. The maximalist creation process in their Ljubljana studio involved analogue synths, toys, computers with sound apps, and collaborators like Donna Marina Mårtensson and Richard X. They drew influences from K-pop, J-pop, and '90s Eurodance, yet maintained that their "primary influence and reference point remained Laibach itself." Available via Mute on limited edition neon pink vinyl and CD.
